Materials

The first thing to be looking for when purchasing base layers is the material that the layer is made from as the different materials give different properties to the layer itself in the next few slides we will go over the different materials and what they do to differ from each other.

Synthetic

Synthetic

Synthetic layers are usually made of polyester and are a very lightweight material, while this means they aren’t the warmest possible layer however what they lack in extreme warmth they make up for by being extremely breathable and also fully machine washable.

Merino Wool

Merino Wool

Merino Wool base layers are made of (you guessed it!) wool and are much warmer than synthetic layers however at that expense they are also heavier than synthetic layers, while very breathable and extremely soft they do not dry as quickly and are also not fully machine washable, Merino layers are highly recommended for much colder scenarios.

Another feature of base layers that should be looked out for is the level of moisture wicking that the layer provides, you want there to be good levels of moisture wicking as this takes away moisture from your body, this keeps you much warmer as if that liquid cools down then you become much colder due to it.

You should also look to see if the base layers that you are looking into have anti-bacterial properties as this can stop any forms of mildew and mould forming due to sweat, this not only makes these clothes hygienic but also makes sure they last longer for the wearer.
